Proud to Be There

Last night's world premiere of Milk was one of the great nights of my life. I must admit that I was extremely nervous beforehand. I love the movie, but I knew that expectations would be extremely high. The Harvey Milk story was finally being brought to the screen, almost thirty years after Harvey's assassination. We were premiering the film in the Castro Theatre on Castro Street, where much of the action took place. The audience included many people who knew Harvey and had very specific ideas of how they thought his story should be told. Some of them had been extras in the movie and others had stopped by to watch us shoot the film. So many felt that Harvey's story was a huge part of their personal history. Fortunately, the reaction was unlike any that I'd ever witnessed. People all around me were weeping at the end. It was an amazing experience. I will be forever grateful to writer Dustin Lance Black and director Gus Van Sant for allowing Bruce Cohen and me to join them on this incredible journey to bring Harvey Milk's story to the screen. Last night was not only the biggest movie premiere in San Francisco history, it was one of the best premieres I ever been fortunate enough to attend. To have played a role in making this film happen has been a tremendous honor.
