I love this movie loads it is my fave movie and i love james mcavoy he is so gorgous lol love ya james
THANK YOU KAYLIA!!!! people are telling me that he whispering to her....they made me think i was depth! and yes james is the sexest! theres no getting past that.
I read the book before I saw the movie and the book was amazing!! I could not turn away from that book! It was like I was glued to the pages. I finally rented the movie and i watched it three times. I have to admit that the movie was not as good as the book but i still enjoyed it for what it was. I enjoyed Atonement because it was different from other romantic movies that i have seen before. Atonement did not have a happy ending as many love stories tend to have, but i like that about this movie. It's different and it stands out!!
The acting was great in this movie!! Soisire Ronan really deserved that oscar nomination that she got for her role as young Briony. Vanessa Redgrave was breathtaking playing Briony as an old woman. Even though she was only in the last few minutes of this movie, BABY SHE OWNED THOSE FEW MINUTES!!!
Also, James McAvoy was FINE AS HELL in this movie!!!! That sex scene in the library was TOO SEXY!! I wish it was me in the library with James instead of that other Chick!! JAMES IS MY MAN SO ALL YOU LADIES NEED TO KEEP MY MAN!!!!!
To pynk56 Robbie never whispered anything to cecilia. The only time that he said anything to her is when he said that he loved her. AHHH HOW SWEET!! LOL!! Trust me I know I watched that sex scene over and over again because James McAvoy was so DAMN SEXY in it!!!
In conclusion, the movie was great but not as good as the book. If you have not read the book yet then you really need to hit it up because it is incredible!!!
I first saw this movie in the theater, and then read the heartbreaking story by Ian McEwan. Not sure why, but It has stayed with me for months and months! The director and screenwriter did a marvelous job. The movie is superb on every level. I've bought the DVD and have watched it several times since. The era, the childhood friendship turned into love, just really resonate. How many other promising lives have been cut off like that because of war? It should be a classic. Love that James McEvoy too, gotta love those Scotsmen....
Good storyline, but would have been better if more scenes were added to elaborate on the name attonement. Seems the injured parties had to attone for being wronged! It went out of point and didn't have much contents to show us love and the reason for it, which was the theme of the story
help me settle something!!! please....during the sex scene in the libary (obviously) does robbie whisper anything to ceclia......some one please if you know...comment back!
Great movie, but the sad ending will haunt me forever.
This film reminds me of someone that I once loved. Just looking at this movie makes me realize that I already lost the person that I once used to call my "Friend".
Great movie by the way, I could relate to cecilia very much.
The movie was great.. Not what I was expecting it to be but turned into something much more. The movie isn't about a love story which was it's initial let-on but rather the telling of truths... such as a the name "atonement". The reason why most people felt left in the dark was due to there not being a let on as to what the people thought during their actions and contemplations.. It is a true way of telling a story.. no one will ever know what dialogue you have in your mind during any action. Hence the reason why Bryonne didn't make anything up.. Remember this is her story of her wrong doings not the story of two lovers. It is a very true way of novel-to-screen.. We are allowed to think what they must feel during their tryst allowing to put our emotions in place. The ending was horribly sad but again.. this is her atonement.. her way of saying out loud finally what she did wrong before she loses the ability to say it.. Its obvious that nothing will be "undone" by her words. While most people would never admit such a wrong doing especially since she had ample time to take it back and didn't and after the death of C and Robbie's death nothing could be done about it.. she finally admits and says her peace with herself... great story.
I know I will never watch or read anything by Ian McEwan ever after watching atonement. It has been the most depressing thing I think I have ever watched. Worse than Romeo and Juliet and Titanic. And at least with Titanic you have the semblance of a happy ending. And I agree with Daphne Gayle that Briony and Danny need to be killed, but I would also include that redheaded cousin along with them too. I am excruciatingly dissappointed by the ending of this movie.
May I say
I would like to kill Briony
and danny.
ok well i thought that the movie was amazing and James McAvoy is totally delicious!!!!! i loved the fact that instead of making it a happily ever after they made it well very sad for me .... but i thought it was such a good movie... the first time i saw it i watched over and over again ... Best Love Movie Ever!!!!
Very sory for my post.
it was interesting and i endjoyed it!
First rate. Enjoy!
I saw little the strikings of right in liturgy, like excerpts, cover.
Oh my goodness. This movie was amazing and I shall buy it and watch it over and over again. I have recommended it to all of my friends, and they have absolutley adored it. I bought the book immediatly after I saw the movie, and It has been just as good. I wich I could of had the excitement of seeing it intheatres, but instead rented it. Either way, I had the most excitiment than I have ever had with any other movie. Pride and Prejudice was GREAT! And the director did just as an amazing job on this!! I love this movie!!!
A movie that captures some of the heartache of a Century of war and human suffering. All the broken hearts coalesce for a few moments in a breat-taking beautiful mvie
Excellent film, but why do the historical reaearchers always let them down! The scene with James McAvoy in the bath early in the film has an aircraft pictured through the skylight, an R.A.F. bomber. The only problem is that the first heavy R.A.F. bomber was the Short Stirling, which wasn't commisioned by the Air Staff until 1936 and the first protype flew in 1939, but this scene was supposed to be in 1935. Tedious I know, but these people get paid a fortune and still can't get it right.
I wish I'd never watched this movie - I found nothing beautiful from it... only a bleak and tragic reminder of just how cruel the twists of life and fate and interference can be. This left me with a terrible sadness for all those who find firsthand that happy endings are never guaranteed. I resent being 'suckered' into something that only leaves the heart with an empty longing for the perceived contentment of hope for a future of life and love.
Everything about this movie was amazing. I saw it in the theater and I have bought it and watched it twice more. It never gets old, and I feel a million emotions every time. Splendid acting! Great music! And the beauty of the film is wonderous.
I'm a young college student, and this is honestly one of my favorite movies now after seeing it with a friend of mine =). I'm sure there are other guys who enjoyed this as well. Excellent work of art!
As a woman over fifty, I am embarressed to admit that I am now in love with a 28 year old man. James McAvoy is delicious!
I truly love this movie, best movie of the year. I could have never imagined a film could describe true love like this. Just the fact that he would stay faithful like that for such a long time astonishes me. I can't wait to read the book!
it was a good movie, i cried, but i did not get attached to Cecilia's character, I didn't really feel too sorry for her, there should have been more character development for her.
Superb. So well done on so many levels. McAvoy has an amazing range. His scene in the tearoom with Knightley was so well done. It was gut-wrenching without being over the top. The Dunkirk scene was incredible. Finally, I absolutely loved the attention to detail, especially the hospital/nurses scenes. Bravo to all involved. It's a film I will watch over and over.
I watched Atonement this weekend and enjoyed it.
I definitely enjoyed the movie, even if there is no happy ending. It is bit confusing at first till you realize you are seeing different perspectives. A young girl with a crush is jealous of her older sister who has the attention of the man she is crushing on. She realizes he sees her as only a child, and does not even see how she feels about him. She may misunderstand some of what is happening, but she understands he prefers her sister, and she gets even with them both. You really need to pay attention because of the way it skips back and forth with flashbacks. I caught more things the second time I watched the movie, and more after watching the special features. She knows it is not him who attacked her cousin, in fact I don't even think her cousin was raped, I think she only acted that way because they were caught in the act, and she protected her
"attacker" by not telling the truth herself, and allowing Briony to lie about Robbie. Because Robbie was not the same class as they were, he would be less likely to be believed. Her attacker, Leon's friend Paul was wealthy, and you could tell there was an attraction between them, and she was flirting with him.
While watching this wonderful movie, I too was initially confused by the order of the telling and the reason why some scenes were depicted twice. But once I got home and thought about it somemore, I realized the point was that the scenes were meant to be both the telling of the story from the main character's point of view (for her novel) as well as the 'actual' story. This layering effect is in fact one of the nuances that makes the film so interesting. And it makes you think about possible unreliabiliy of some witnesses' points of view.
I watched the movie tonight. I really wanted to like it, but it was just all over the place and somewhat hard to follow at times. I too felt that scenes were left out, though I do see where the director wanted to go, I felt he never really got there. I have to get the book, I need closure (in a sense)!!
I loved this movie. It reflects what people actually lived through during that era in Europe. Yes, had they lived happily ever after it would have been a more "comfortable" ending but that wasn't the ending most people enjoyed. Very thought provoking.
Based on the Ian McEwan bestseller of the same name, "Atonement" should not be mistaken as a romance. It is about the writer, not the lovers (from whom we are doubly removed). In maintaining that perspective, and re-enforcing it at the end, the film wasn’t the improvement it could have been. Yet "Atonement" is an achievement in fimmaking; the screenwriter, director, cinematographer, art director, and costume designer, have together painted a beautiful, accurate portrait of both the novel and the era in which it takes place. Unfortunately, portraits aren’t anything more than visual. "Atonement" is no exception. It climaxes early, and forgoes a great deal of plot in favour of ages of extended resolution. It is layered with more with sweeping scores - and ticking clocks - than with dialogue. And while the characters seem to do a lot of contemplating during their silences (we see strong performances from all the actors), they are too introverted to share much of their thoughts; the result is an overall aloofness about the picture that can lead us, too, to become detached.
OK, so i bought and watched the movie the morning it came out before i went to school, actually, and although i still loved it and cried my eyes out, i would have rather seen the ending from the book. most movies i enjoy i watch more than once, but i couldn't bear to see the tragic ends Cecilia and Robbie came to...Anyway i still enjoyed it immensely.
Although this film doesn't end the way most would like, it is a true reflection of the way most couples ended in this time period. I would like to imagine that we all experience a love like C's a Robbie's, however, the theme of Bryannie's play as a child exposes that most of us love or marry for simplicity or in my words, " safety". I was deeply saddened by the ending, not because I was wrapped up in the characters, but becuase I know that many lost the ones they DEEPLY loved, or each other, despite the child's selfish acts. Also, a 10 year old in the 1930's who witnesses acts or innuendos of the sexual nature would most definetly be traumatized, not understanding why it might turn a woman on to be talked to in such a way, whereas in the present, a 10 year old most likely wouldn't be phased, as nearly all households have been exposed to or use this type or language. Personally, I think Bryannie saw a crime and not a passionate moment between Cecilia and Robbie, and what started off as a confession of "truth" turned into revenge for her sister, not Lola. What "good" sister would let her sibling be with a "sex monster". As Brynannie grew in maturity, with her flashbacks, I think the recognization of what she thought was a love between herself and Robbie, was really an infatuation on her behalf, as her body language suggested when she invited Robbie to her play. There is one thing that we all must take away from this film, whether we liked it or not, and that is to love a true love, and never lose sight of what our time on Earth is really about, because life is short, and we all have a death clock ticking.
i bought Atonement on DVD and although I felt deeply saddended that the story ended the i loved the story overall. the acting was top notch by McAvoy & Knightly but i do agree w/many that said there was too much missing...it seemed incomplete in a way. anyway, i'm currently ingrossed in the book, wich just mean i'm will probably be very disappointed by the time i finish Atonement in it written, purer form.
There wasn't enough character development or love development in the movie. If I had read the book first I might already have an attachment to the characters and feel hopeful that they would end up together, but since I didn't read the book and the movie didn't make me fall in love with the characters it was quite boring to watch. The only reason it wasn't a waste of 2 hours was because I was able to warn others to just buy the book and skip the movie.
Had my father been alive, he would have thrown his shoe at the screen in exasperation. One of the most annoying and overrated films I have seen in a long time. If you're a luvvie, you might enjoy it. As a film buff, I'd rate it as claptrap.
I can't believe someone like Billy has wasted so much of his time writing about a movie he does not like. He cannot spell to save his life, nor does he have any passion for life. This movie had a message that seems to have surpassed Billy's small brainwaves. It's just too bad that people can't watch a movie like it or dislike it and move on. Their is enough bitterness in this world.
This was the very most helpful film I have watched. Beautiful, even though tragic. I was emotional much of the day after viewing it. Thanks, I really appreciate this story line. I wore brown today. God bless us! Now for the good part.......
I thought the movie was wonderful, everything was very thought out.
The direction was sluggish, the flashbacks within flashbacks showed a director who couldn't make his point with one shot, there was never any feeling of tension, the one awkward, fully clothed sex scene...the participants looked like bugs that hit a windshield... nothing about the characters made you even like them, and when the three pals were walking through the nicely photographed Dunkirk scene, what the heck was their destination?...oh, I don't think the movie had a destination.
I loved this book and the writing and diction was incredible, but when I saw the movie (although the acting on James McAvoy's part was incredible) I was extremely disappointed. The ending was completely altered, important pieces were missing, and the entire thing was all too dramatic. The drama involved in the plot is so much more poignant with Ian McEwan's simplicity and poise. The book was extremely descriptive, so there was not much room for inventiveness on the part of the directors, and yet they still messed it up...that's the only thing truly amazing about this movie. Out of five stars? I'd give it 1.
I thought this movie was excenelent!!
the whole plot was amazing,..and i loved how the Broiny girl was sooo sad and wanted 4givness 4 what she did.hehe i was thinkin thats right "bitch"...lol
Anyways James Mcavoy was amazing
and so was Keria Knightly.
I couldnt think of anyother actors or actresses
to put in this movie than both of themmm....
awsome movie. C=
You people need to get out more. Seriously. The only thing tragic about Atonement is the time wasted watching it.
Let alone filming it.
it was beyond tragic im not the first nor the last to say it , clearly ! it was terrible in the most brilliant of sense, it was horrible and it lingures in ur mind long after u have watched it, i am incredibly surprised ther are those who hated the movie. it is worth a watch but beware u are gona come out of ther incredibly sad
OK
Final rewrite. I meant "...tje royalties she collects from writing twenty other novels.
And of course, as this entire endeavor can be characterized, it's "despicable", not dispicable". And by the way, The war seens were pathetic, especially the long shot a la Scorsese in "Goodfellas"
"Knocked Up" was more deserving of an Oscar. It was a more believable love story.
Before the human thesauri criticize my grammar or spelling, do understand that I meant "write" instead of "right".
Though in this case, it well could have been a Freudian slip. There was nothing "right" about this movie. I wish the author never found the time to "write" this dispicable waste of time.
I don't know what world you people live in if you loved this movie. A group of spoiled aristocratic snobs believes a spoiled child, backs her up, ruins the guys life and the little ( to quote the movie) c### never has to answer for anything but the royalties she rights for twenty other novels?
Please.
There is something to be said about a movie that stays with you well after watching it. Atonement is a beautiful work of art. Tragic yes- but worth it- even for the most fleeting of romances.
Thanks for all the comments. I haven't seen this movie yet, however I've been waiting. I'm sure I will. I'm a big Jane fan.
me chetraj awasthi.i dont know about this
i also think, for some reason, people think movies are outstanding and "beautiful pieces of work" if it flashes back and forth and there is atleast one "fucked up" character. they dont even care about the story line. what some may think is brilliant some may think is pointless.
i dont know what all the hype was about? they didnt even have a relationship in the movie before they were separrated and it was supposed to be a love story? i am a reader and hopefully the book is better. Tragically, more than the so-called love story, I havent read the book yet. Definately not what i expected!
zicky, the song played in during the movie's commercial is "Apologize" sang by One Republic ft. Timbaland. It's a beautiful song, perfect for this movie.
And Accord9, yes you are so right. This movie was robbed at the Academy's that it's almost ridiculous. It's hauntingly beautiful.
ok, so what is the song that plays during the tv commercial for the DVD?! The chorus has the lyrics "It's too late..."
Amazing movie. ROBBED at Academy Awards. So SO much better than No Country for Old Men. Beautifully done, haunting. Has become one of my all time favorite films.
I loved this book and now the movie also. The emotions are portrayed so well by first the author, and in the movie by the actors and director, it gets the reader/viewer swept up along with the characters and truly feel for them. I'm very disappointed the film didn't get the recognition it deserves, but I loved it and know many others did as well. And Joe Wright is much too talented to continue to be ignored as a marvelous director.
I've seen Titanic, but I'm excited to see this!
it's a sad movie for me( if im one of the character) it's inspiring, actually i watch it 3x on my DVD copy. I found also that the writter of this movies heartedly felt the emotions. its like she wants to touch everybody love to someone
Although I have not read the book, I have just finished watching the movie, to be exact it just ended about 3 minutes ago. Atonement is.. well, is so well written it will lead you to cry because of its creativity. I believe this is most deffinately one of the best written movies I have ever had the pleasure of watching. It's a tragic love story that yet is based on love, gives so much more. It's creative how the different views of the characters give such life to the plot. The characters are wonderful and the actors that stepped into these rolls outdid themselves. Keira Knightly has grown on me so much since her "Bend It Like Beckham" days and won me over in Pride and Prejudice, I love that she's doing movie's like this, and James.. wow.. I had always thought he would be a one hit wonder but also has won me over. This movie is great for people who really get into movies, and watch every aspect. Not typically for the people who are into Vin Dysel, and Fast and Furious movies.. if you catch my drift.
All in all, I loved it and will think many more will also.

Pigg, get *yourself* some spelling and grammar lessons before you repeat your mistake of using "your" to mean "you are." Educated speakers of English who have studied even a little of any Romance language can read Spanish, so we don't have a problem with other tongues on a site which is accessible on the (say it with me: ) WORLDWIDE web. Now, learn how to use a message board--your silly comment was posted *three* times.
I think that for some of the people who posted a comment, you really need to learn some grammar or at least take a typing class. For the people typing in Spanish on an English website, "NO ONE UNDERSTANDS WHAT YOUR SAYING!!!!!" For the person who wants Thai subtitles, ITS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!!!! And we will tell three six mafia that you say hi and want to be on their next cd. For one Keira Knightley is NOT in King Kong, that was Naomi Watts. And we are also very sorry to hear that Korea is fighting.....but i dont think it needs to be announced. For all you other extremely intelligent people out there, be safe and wear a helmet!!!!! hahaha
P.S. It was a good movie, not exactly what we expected, but still good!
Just bought the movie a few minutes ago! I am so pumped! I have the book and the movie and waiting for the soundtrack. I haven't been so excited for a movie since The Notebook!
i havent watched but have alot of interest to see it. it seems to be a lovely film.hoping to watch it soon.
Just saw the film, to be honest I am not really one for romances but I wouldn't neccessarily put this movie in that catagory. I found it heartfelt, clever, charming and ultimately very sad but all the same extremely enlightening and enjoyable. Hats off to everyone involved.
This has to be the biggest pile of pants I have seen for god knows how long. Why some one would write such a load of miserable maudling depressing rubbish is beyond me, they should be writing for East Enders… Errr... get the impression I didn’t like it?
I've been DYING to see Atonement. Not being aloud to see it in theaters sucked so, I bought the book. It was literally ingenous, overwhelming and a book about true love. And I did cry at the end lol
I can't wait for the DVD I also want the soundtrack
I'm sooo excited!!
i want to second what Madison wrote. although i didn't see the film in theaters (i'm waiting for the DVD...4 more days) i have read the book, and i enjoyed it immensely, but i cried my eyes out, and it also made me feel strange, out of place, and as Madison and Briony, like no one understood why the book affected me the way it did. on a lighter note, James McAvoy is one of the most handsomest actors, and my favorite in this role. Kiera Knightley is amazing! Although i do think to fully grasp this movie, you must read the awesome book beforehand!
Can't wait until 3/18...
I am in the midst of reading the book, and although it is a bit slow at the beginning, I am really enjoying it. I hope the movie is just as good.
i love this movie this won of the best movis i have aver seen and the best movie kira knitley played in I LOVE KIRA KNITLEY!
ivn't seen the film but from the clips v seen i know it's gonna be fun to see even if it takes long to understand.Ithink i'll watch it twice to really understand this movie.
I cannot wait t own it. Keira Knightley is my absolute favorite actress, and she looks wonderful in this movie! It is soooo sad and i cry when i hear the Title 'Atonement', it is simply brilliant. I think it is my favorite. Keira is kickbutt and James is great as well!!!! love love love
This movie was fantastic! I usually don't like romance movies but I have to say this was spellbounding! I couldn't stop looking away! And the ending... it blew me away! It was quite depressing though... and the cinematography was beautiful! And I have to admit, Dario Marianelli did an excellent job on the score! Loved it! Totally gonna buy this movie for my DVD collection!
i like yall movies but i think hatchet is the best movie of the year and tell 3sixmafia that they song is tight and tell them to send me a neckalace to they know a hypinotize chain to jonestown miss pobox3438639 and give me a call to 16623584505 and tell me what you think about about me being on yall next show?
i loved this film. this interesting movie.
exellent
Atonement was advertised so poorly they made it look like a chick flick. It's not the best movie of the year but I wouldn't have been too surprised if it had won because it's such a great story. The book was told from the POV of that little girl Briony and I thought it would be impossible to imitate on film. For that it should have won adapted screenplay. Failed romance is the story of Atonement and the advertisements make it look way too sweet. The cinematography everybody is raving about is good, but I'm guessing they haven't seen There Will Be Blood yet... Lastly, I don't think it deserved score but it was creative with the type writer. Congrats for a great movie that doesn't stray from a great book.
Film is amazing, Cinematography outstanding, acting fantastic, sounds even better, all i can say but what I want to know is whats the film (black and white) in the background where robbie finds himself during the war.
i am irani this movie is very very is niss thanks
i haven't seen it yet but i would love to watch it once . ye,her accent is hard t0 listen. long film? i will try to stand it.
I usually love Keira Knightley but in this movie she played such a bitchy person I could not see why the guy would fall in love with her. The war scenes were awesome.
I hate it!!!!
I don't know
i looovvvvvvvvvvvved this movie but it was sad at the end
This movie suxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 2 the core!!!!I cant believe i watched it.I just cant believe McAvoy acted in such a sick movie when he did a great job in Last King of Scotland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dooooooooooo wanna watch this movie. It looks cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But they have spoilt Keira's beautiful face:-( and made her look anorexic
I don't see why people had difficulty following the premise and I don't know how anyone could not enjoy this movie. The cast was perfect, Joe Wright did another amazing directing job, and I loved the story. I’m so glad I was able to see it twice in theaters and can't wait to purchase it.
I was glad there were several members of the cast from pride and prejudice in this, and I that several from this movie were in The Other Boleyn girl
I loved it, and definitely would recommend it! Congrats on the Oscar!
Glad it all worked out for you. Should I send a bill then?
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........zzzzzzzzz
I just finished watching the movie. If my friend hadn't told me to watch it, I would have turned it off well before the dinner scene. I thought it was very slow moving to start with. The flashbacks were confusing, the typing sounds in the background were disturbing, and the accents were hard to understand at times. The ending was also disappointing. I'm glad I didn't pay to see this in the movies.

I can't get this film out of my head! I'm in a condition of grief.. Normally I find it beautiful when it's not a happy ending, but this time i am really sad.
I'm going soft : )
This movie, Atonement is just amazing. It is one of the most moving, beautiful, intelligent movie I have seen in a long time. The acting between McAvoy and Knightely was amazing, they make it look so real, I almost had to tell myself that this was in fact a fictional movie, not a real one. The first time I saw it I did not unerstand all of it, but I could not stop thinking about it. I watched it again, and I was even more impressed. I would recommend this movie to everyone, but it is not a movie to watch if you are in for a light and uncomplicated movie. I would not say that this movie is pleasing, more disturbing, but in an incredible way. This movie shows how easily your life can be ruined, and how important it is to think about consequenses and separate fantasy and reality. Briony's imagination and what she actually sees are mixed and she ruins Robbie's and Cecilia's lives. The small mistakes in the world can be very grave in deed. The story is beautifully told, and I can promise eveyone who watces it, that in the end of the movie they will have tears in their eyes.
amei este filme
the most amazing film, but you have to get used to the unusual flashbacks, see it a second time to really appreciate its brillance. I had a little problem getting used to kiera knightley's clipped accent, very 30's i know, but difficult to adjust your ear to and i would have thought for the americans virtually impossible. I feel that it is a film that will go on to be a classic and one will wonder why it did not win in both the academy and oscar awards.
In responce to crystal when she said "in the movie, cecillia and robbie hated that briony jumped to the coclusion that robbie had raped lola but later they didnt mind jumping to the conclusion that it was danny."
i dont know if they had it in the movie but in the book, at dinner lola can down stairs with bruses on her arms. when someone asked her what happened, danny quickly stepped in and said it was her brothers who did that to her, but danny had scratches all over him, and the little brothers had nothing. then lola started to cry really hard. so it leads you to believe that danny had rapped/attacked her once already, so it had to have been him again outside in the dark. also ealryer in the book danny was very flirty with lola.
This movie is awesome!
I want to know what is the name of the movie that Robbie cried in the front of when he was in France, why Joe Wright chooses this old movie?
Anyway, I like this movie so much!

Atonement was a beautifully made film. Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, and Saiorse Ronan were excellent. I was most impressed with Saiorse Ronan. She looked mean. Ronan's character also had scary eyes.
Did anyone else notice Brionys' 'mole' moving from cheek to cheek?
I usually prefer the book version of a story to the movie adaptation, but this time it was the other way around. I got the book from the library last week and read it in a single day, and it was good but not riveting. But..... I just got home from the movie and that was amazing--even mesmerizing when compared to the book. I agree that some scenes were a bit long/odd--esp some of the war footage (okay, he's at war for a long time, we get it) and the freaky soldiers on the beach thing. However...move past that and look at the story as a whole. That typing over the music score made me jumpy!
Wow, this movie. Wow, the only word to describe its illustrious beauty. The acting was pitch perfect. Robbie, Cecillia and Briony were all cast abnormaly well. No other actors nor actresses could have pulled off these magnificant parts. The Direction in this movie was also a thing to marval at, Joe Wright is a genius and I will forever look up to him. James McAvoy is highly underestimated, he is one of the finest actors of our time, being an aspiring actor my self I tryed to learn from this part. Keria Knightley was brilliant as always. As for Sorise Ronan, it was refreshing to see a young actress, who can actually act! The score moved me as well as everyone else who has experienced its brilliance. The cinamatography was a work of art. Overall I feel this was the best movie of the year. If the Academy doesn't reward it what it diserves, then it is there loss. But in our minds, as the fans, it will live forever as a best picture.
joined by love ... separated by fear .. redeemed by hope .
simply awsom movie ... specially the suspene , the scenes which moves in past present at a same time ...
these things really ticks you to watch till end..
the most good thing is to realise of your mistake which you did somewhere in past.
good moral theme ...
Very intriguing and good film until the scene where the search for the redheads and the rape takes place. After that I felt the movie just lost the plot. It is almost as if there was a different director who wanted to rush through telling a more and more unconvincing and unfulfilling tale. The surreal scene of the war-torn coastal French fairground with the crazy scenes of manic British soldiers was not convincing at all to the period and really quite stupid. So was the depiction of a black British soldier, who also accidentally got lost along the way as well. Black men fighting for Britain was not in vogue in WW1 and neither do I think WW2. Also this was not drug-crazed Vietnam - what was the director thinking or even for that matter, the books author, if it is the same story - too unbelievable. The wonderful little actress who started off playing Briony was a delight too, until her part ends and then it is spoiled by the far less convincing portrayal by the two older actresses. I rate it 5/5 for the first half 0/5 for the second which makes an ruined average of 2.5/5 stars.
Great movie, but I am wondering--was the redheaded cousin being raped in the woods, or knowingly sleeping with the chocolate guy? She was certainly coming on to him in a creepy, 13 year old way before this scene. Did she allow the encounter and then just go along that it was rape? (she does marry the guy later, after all)
yeah, where did the original site go? I loved all of the movie clips, the icons, the soundtrack bits...all of it really. what happened to it?
i love this film very much and will aways. the best movie in my life is the lord of the rings, but now it's not certainly true,in opposit i was already be in loved this film though. in a film have beautyful and ablility actor, especially, a supporting actress, she has excellent acting, the best in me since i had watched, Althrough i now don't know her name yet. but she made me pleasure. no competition about it really.
it was good but it got a bit boring at times
JanetR -- Thanks soooo much. I haven't heard the whole song yet, but I'm in love with the tidbit I've heard.
Atonement gave me confidence that true, artistic movies could still be made. It was a magificent experience that will be with m forever.
What a beautiful movie. It IS the est movie of the year, no competition.
I also can't believe that the Academy didn't recognize James McAvoy and Keira Knightley for their perfect performances! They both truly deserved nominations!
Atonement was an absolute masterpiece! An excellent and intriguing novel and film. I'm betting it will win big at the Academy Awards.
I LOVE this movie! It is so beautiful and moving. There are no words to describe the chemistry between James McAvoy and Keira Knightley. It absolutely infuriates me that neither one of them were nominated for an Oscar for their acting. I am really pulling through for this film to win Best Picture though!
I personally loved this movie. What I loved most was that I had to think about it for the rest of the day. It was not laid out entirely for me, so I had to discuss it with someone. What was real and not real? Especially given that we find out at the end that some of the story was "made up" to make the author feel better. There are clues left to answer these questions, but it takes time to sort through. Definitely not for the "Meet the Spartans" or "Bucket List" crowd. Keira Knightly was just very sexy, that's all I can say.... and it's not because of the way she looks. It's the way she acts. Anyone who might think this is a chick flick just needs to experience Kiera in this movie. Seeing this on DVD is wise, so you can go back and review multiple times. A five day rental would be wise! Make a week out of it!

The song is called "Apologize" and it's by One Republic, although the one in the commercial may be the remix done by Timbaland on his new CD.
Atonement was a gorgeous film, enough said.
Its really very simple folks. She opened the letter, which we saw and removed it from the envelope. She gave her sister the opened letter and the reason why she asked if there was an envelope was because she wanted to know if Briony had read it. Simply that was it. It OBVIOUSLY was the type written letter, that was the whole point. He had taken the wrong letter and thats what Briony read. All of it added up to the confusion within Briony that lead her to believe that Robby was responsible for raping her cousin. Why is there so much confusion? Also why is it so hard to believe that he grabbed the wrong letter. What possibly could be going on in his head that he wasn't paying attention when he grabbed it. Maybe he was nervous. You people can suspend your disbelief for so many other movies why does it seem absurd that something like that would happen. Think about your lives and how many times you did something really stupid but didn't want to admit to it. The movie was beautifully shot, well told, and performed with much talent.
Does anyone know the song that's played for the tv promo of this movie? It's a contemporary, slow song sung by a man (I think), and it sounds like he's saying, "It's too late...". The song doesn't seem to be on the soundtrack.
This movie sucked big time. The theatre had an illuminated clock that I watched for the entire two hours. I've never seem time move so slowly.
Thank you for that explanation. Yes, I can accept that the letter was retrieved from Cecelia's room, not from Bione's room.
Can you explain why the letter was not in an envelope when Brione handed it to Cecelia, what significance was the question Cecelia asked "Was there an envelope?" Bione had no envelope in her hand, yet when the letter is retrieved by Cecelia's room, it was in an envelope.
The thing about the envelope is puzzling to me and that is what suggested to me there could have been two typewritten letters (and I am not considering the hand-written letter by Robbie which he INTENDED to send). One letter (the sexually charged one) IN an envelope, and another letter (typed by Bione) without an envelope. I think the movie portrayed that the note being read by Cecelia was typed--so as to make it clear it was NOT the note handwritten by Robbie.
To Dona Terry below :
No.. she did give Robbie's letter to Cecelia. Later that night she took the letter from Cecelia's drawer / room.
I need help. I am guessing that the 13-year sister DID NOT give the sexually explicit note to her older sister. Because it showed the original letter (in its envelope) in the 13-year old's drawer with her other letters and stuff -- when she retrieved it to give to the police.
No way, the older sister would have given the note back to her 13-year sister. So, I am assuming that the note that the 13-year gave to her sister was one which she had composed and typed on her t ypewriter, AS IF it were from the young man.
It must have been a powerfully person, tender, and loving letter -- because when Cecelia read it, she turned immediately to her sister and asked her if she had read it -- and also she asked if it came in an envelope. I am convinced that the note Cecelia read was NOT the crude note --
Instead of having to atone for an error in judgement, the young girl should be credited for writing such a beautiful love letter -- as to convince her sister that she was in love with Robby. Her letter got the two lovers together.
If she had not re-written the letter, the two people might not have EVER known they loved each other. The crude letter, had it be delivered to Cecelia, might have caused Cecelia to reject Robby.
Comments:
Beautiful acting, beautiful script.
heaven help me, this was such grace :) the thing which added the most magic for me was finding (your finding, my enjoying) 2 actresses that could actually carry and build momentum in the two different times. how many times have moviemakers settled for look-alikes that parry with cardboard.
it was wonderful in editing as well, and screenplay-- leaving some things out. many intimate moments, but still a mystery after i'm done watching.
the scenery and shots were spectacular and made me feel visceral magic of nature (which i love so much)
at first i thought it would be a dry pedantic story of the rich, with the lovely, overwhelming estate--but far from it.
from the first scene, i identified with Brione--a skinny, overwrought girl too young to get a 'real boy'. i was that girl for so long ;) you made me jealous ;)
magic, i swear :) thanks to all of you who helped to make it.
thank you :)
i want to see this movie so bad i think it will b great
The book and movie were amazing! my family did not like the movie because they didn't read the book, but i loved it. it put me into a very strange mood, i felt like no one understood me and i could never explain myself to anyone or how i felt. i felt, in short, like Briony.
P.S.- James McAvoy is now a hunk in my book!
Gooooooooooooooooooood JOb
Looks a good one but would love to see it
I agree with Ashley, what happened to the other site? I loved the other site.
i think yall r great
bah..... weak.... awesome visuals, especially the pre-war countryside.... but that doesn't make up for the continuity of character development [lack thereof, really] and perspective jumping/rewind. Also found one thing very frustrating. Robbie's two notes to Cec! The pervy one was two sentences at best, and typed. The handwritten one was much longer and almost filled up the page. When you fold them over there had to be a difference between the smoothness of the untouched portion of one vs the risen bumps of writing on the other side of the other! even if you don't bother to *LOOK* at either... certainly your periferal could help? it just doesn't work. Perhaps that whole experience came from Briony's imagination again...?
Laura: Did you even watch it for every second of its beautiful unfolding story? It reminded me of a movie they would have made in the 1940s, no wonder they didn't talk a lot. It was more dramatic and suspenseful with less dialogue. For a two hour movie to unfold and explain the tragedy and truth two lovers had to go through while the background of a war with depth and pain took place...well, I don't understand how you could think it's boring. As for the characters; the love scene alone pulled many emotions of acting out of Kiera and McAvoy. It's eye opening and stunning.
I like 2 see kiera in person.my family miss her.
It's been a long time since we have had a real story with much tenderness. Thank you.
ilove kira

I loved this film, ordered the book straight away. My husband didn't enjoy it as much as me, too much realism perhaps. Congratulations to everyone involved.
Thanks for everyone pointing out the problems with the Lifetime ad units. This has now been resolved. Enjoy the site!

I love this movie but my English is not good
I want Thai subtitle in HDDVD.
saw it 2x but i extremely bored in some scenes. There are some non essential scenes that must be deleted, like the kids scenes....
i'm sorry, but i'm disappointed :(
Just saw it and was extremely disappointed. Way too long, boring characters and could hardly understand a word they said.
Wish someone would please explain what's so wonderful about it. Characters were wooden and dialogue was practically non-existent.
Very disappointing......
I really enjoyed this film I love the way you could relate to all the characters and to comparison to real life events, as well as actions. As soon as the film was over I went to borders and bought the book for those who have seen the film you prob. now why!
It is a good movie and wew love him .it"s our prefered movie.

we love you.
very well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This movie is has touched me on many levels, I have watched it several times and I cry uncontrollably, especially during the scene at the Cafe and of course during the ending with Vanessa. Gripping and the soundtrack is fantastic and meshes well with the movie.
i love the movie..very well done,heartwarming.
I loved this movie and would like to see it win some awards. Yeah, it won the Golden Globe for best picture, but the critics groups and guilds have ignored it. What up? I would say the best movies of the year are this, and There Will Be Blood, but No Country For Old Men seems to be the favorite, which I find reall surprising. It does not seem to be the overall acheivement of Atonement or There Will Be Blood. then ther is Juno, which is really cute, a fun screenplay, and Ellen Page is great - but hardly cinematic achievement.

This film is a true masterpiece and deserves every ounce of recognition that it is getting. I believe that it should have gotten way more awards especially for the actors, but just know that once seen, people tend to love it. I will definitely hope for an oscar and recommend that everyone experience this wonderfull work of art.

fine
about the last scene's role in the movie: briony's atonement is to make the lovers alive and lived happily in fiction, against the fact that they were never reunited and died far away from each other. briony even put the lover's bed into the story, as part of her atonement...acquiescing the fact that he loved her sister and never her...at least to me, it's look like part of her atonement...love it! agree, should win the oscar but i doubt it will...
It was heart-wrenching and brilliantly filmed. It was so emotional that I'm not quite sure how to feel about it even now.
very good photos
is so good yes-ok
This movie was so good it deserves WAY more than 26 comments... c'mon people... wake up from the dead! :)

Truly absorbing plot, fascinating photography, and superb acting. One of the best romantic war dramas that rates right up there with Titanic. See it.
I loved the cinematography in this film!
shes a very pretty girl who has a nice career and plays in my very favorite movie king kong
wrong title for the movie; the Atonement word was misquieded: it is a word used and is more understood by christians and jewish community. Very strong word to be used as a title to this movie: title shuld be more like: beguiled or something like that.
hero and heroines both r beautiful includong their dressings and emotions showing in pictures.i did not see the movie
I truly enjoyed the movie and I thought it was very well done: photography, music, scenes, scenary, action, timeline... I was impressed and pleased with this movie. One of the best for this past year.
This was a fabulous film. i am routing for it to take home the oscar. Unfortunatley, i have my doubts about that happening.
An amazing novel and movie... Best all year round!

Great movie. It should win many awards! LOVE it.
the movie is awesome, keep it up.
pls, keep it up.
Loved this movie to death.
very nice movie
I forgot to add that the cast delivers stellar performances. I love this film.
A brilliant film from start to finish. This one's going to be a classic! Joe Wright was faithful to the book and managed to bring McEwan's impossible masterpiece to the big screen. Though I had read the book beforehand, the film still caught me off guard and knocked me right off my feet. Atonement is a must see!
i want to be sing up for the kids game makeover one
Powerful movie. Interesting twists. If you know about atonement, then you'll guess who will be atoning when the mystery begins. Otherwise, you can imagine several heroes in the movie. Either way, the movie is extremely good on many levels. Beatiful ending. Guys will even like this one.
I loved this film - every little piece of it - but can someone tell me what is the last track that is played in the fil
what an intresting movie how l wish i ll be opportuned to watch it.
The movie looks so interesting.I feel like watching but i donot know how and where to get from.
