The Tony Awards
The relationship between Broadway and Hollywood — or more precisely the Broadway musical and the film musical — has been a long, passionate, sometime embittered, often co-dependent affair. Originally Hollywood just took and took — actors, writers, musicals, and musicians — and used them as it saw fit. But by the 50s, the movie musical started to be a thing all its own. Broadway had its shows, and Hollywood had its MGM musicals. In recent years, however, as Broadway has faltered, Hollywood has been there, giving it plots (from Legally Blond to Grey Gardens), musical scores, even financial backing.
This week, Broadway celebrates itself with the Tony Awards being held on June 15. In recognition, we wanted to celebrate the bond between Broadway and Hollywood by asking five Tony nominees to name their own favorite Hollywood musicals.
