In 2007, at the 79th Academy Awards, the abundance of Mexican filmmakers made clear that the Nuevo Cine Mexicano (or New Mexican Cinema) had come to town. Friends and filmmakers Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel), Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men), and Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) were in attendance, each with a film nominated in multiple categories. Of the five cinematographers nominated, two were Mexicans: Emmanuel Lubezki (Children of Men) and Guillermo Navarro (who won for Pan's Labyrinth). In Movie City: Mexico City, we explore this explosion of Mexican film and especially its epicenter, Mexico City.
