Buster Keaton Meets Thom Yorke
As a way of making my blogging in this space a little more adventurous, I've decided to embark on a little experiment: For the foreseeable future (i.e. as long as I can sustain it), every daily blog entry will be in some way connected to the previous day's post. I decided to do this after stumbling across a video of some of the greatest moments from Buster Keaton's career set to the music of Radiohead. Except – and I must be pedantic here – it's not strictly exclusively Radiohead as one of the song snippets included here is from Rabbit in Your Headlights by UNKLE, which features Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke on vocals. Yesterday, I posted the video for Rabbit in Your Headlights, so there's the first connection.
I must admit the only reason I started watching the "Radiohead Buster Keaton style" video was because the idea of blending two such radically different things seemed so strange to me that I felt compelled to see what the result would be. Despite not expecting it to be very good, it actually works rather beautifully. In essence, I think it's because the defining thing about both Keaton's comedy and Radiohead's music is an elegant, stoic melancholia. In addition to that, a real synchronicity between the music and images is achieved through some excellent editing.
On Monday, look out for the next connected blog entry. I already know what it's going to be and, believe me, you can look forward to another rather remarkable and unexpected cultural collision.
