Thomas J. McLean in The Hollywood Reporter looks at how this year marks a growing appreciation for stop-motion animation. Not only are films like Coraline and The Fantastic Mr. Fox making strong showings, but other animators, like Shane Acker, the director of 9, acknowledges a fondness for the form. Having considering for a second doing his debut in stop motion, Acker says, "I abandoned the idea of stop motion and decided to do it in CG, but I took with it the sensibility of stop-motion films." Coraline director Henry Selick sees a primal delight in the form: “At the heart of stop-motion is this reminder of when you're 3 years old and believe your toys were alive and that you could hold a doll and speak to it and imagine it moving."
