Harvey was always supportive of the gay teachers cause even when other gay people were afraid to touch the issue, I was on a vacation here in SF when I heard about the murders on the radio, no cell phones texting faxes, or internet, besides being heartbroken I had a sick feeling in my stomach that many gay men had, which was we always we were always that something like this would happen to him. His death mobilized the gay muscle the SF now enjoys, his commitment to social justice causes, was in line with my thinking and he definitely had a great influence on my political career, his courage cannot be underestimated.

Tom Ammiano was elected to the California State Assembly in November 2008, representing the 13th Assembly District. prior to which he was a San Francisco City Supervisor. He is a long-time San Francisco Democratic leader who has served the city nearly three decades as a teacher, civil rights leader, educator and Supervisor.
