John Cusack has been a prominent political commentator recently – he was the face of a campaign ad for MoveOn.Org in support of Barack Obama in which he challenged viewers to tell the difference between John McCain and George W. Bush, and he has been blogging regularly at the Huffington Post. On the day after Barack Obama's resounding victory in the presidential election, Cusack picked up his keyboard and typed out a response to the remarkable events of the night before. A simple recollection of the momentous events was not enough, however, and trying to express what had happened in a historical context was also insufficient. As far as Cusack was concerned, this was an occasion that called for… poetry. So, Cusack's post on the Huffington Post was, accordingly, composed entirely in free verse. Very free verse. It would be unfair to quote a fragment of "Real Shock & Awe;" it should be read in its entirety and in context. But Nerve Screengrab's Andrew Osborne, for one, was not particularly impressed with Cusack's shift into more literary territory accusing the actor of being overly politicized and saying that "the inspiring victory of Barack Obama may actually have made things worse." Osborne concludes by saying that he wishes Cusack "a speedy recovery, and hopes the poetry doesn't spread to Joan." Read the poem for yourself here.
