Five writers pick their five favorite drug movies.
Drugstore Cowboy
Matt Dillon's best ever performance and it showed the hard rocking excitement of the drug outlaw's life. You need to have that only with the misery to understand why people do it.
Barfly
Is alcohol a drug? You bet your sweet life it is and until we grasp that nettle all other drug policy fails. Mickey Rourke brilliant as Bukowski and matched all the way by Dunaway.
The Man with the Golden Arm
Amazing smack movie from the fifties with Sinatra excelling as the struggling muso ending up back in Chicago. Not one film has captured junky need better.
Requiem for a Dream
Connelly and Leto far too gorgeous to be drug addicts, but for the brilliant exposition of the mother's drug addiction and Clint Mansell's brilliant soundtrack.
Trainspotting
For my cameo as Mikey Forrester alone.
Irvine Welsh is the author of nine previous works of fiction, including the cult classic Trainspotting and, most recently, Crime. His new short story collection, Reheated Cabbage, will be published by W. W. Norton & Company this September. He divides his time between Florida, Ireland, and Scotland.
