Marking the release of The American, we asked a group of American expat bloggers who now live in Italy to pick the films that most represent their new home country.
Cinema Paradiso
I love how authentically Italy was portrayed in this film. The small alleyways, laundry hanging in every window, the bicycle riding and the passion! Sigh...
Roman Holiday
Living in the Eternal City is a bit like being on permanent holiday. This film shows the two sides of Rome I have come to know. The history dripping from every upturned column by day. And this other, more magical place by night. The fact that it is all done by Vespa is just the cream in the cannoli.
The Italian Job
Completely preposterous... just how I like my Italian men.
La Dolce Vita
Fellini's showcase of the paddle through the Trevi Fountain makes me wonder why I haven't done it yet. It was intoxicating and the fact that it was 3 hours long kinda shows how long it takes Italians to get something done.
Stealing Beauty
Ever since I saw this film, I’ve dreamt of one day living in Sienna and swimming naked (freely) after a long walk through my villa. Also one of the reasons I had to make my move here. I'm also a bit of a wine lush so living in a region named after it appealed to me greatly...
Gina Marie Gomez
Gina Marie Gomez is an American photographer living in Italy, whose work and experiences can be found on her blog Warm Pears.
Having looked at Italy through the lens of her camera, Ms. Gomez seemed an ideal candidate to consider how others have tried to capture Italy on film as well.
