Nick...I just got done reading your great book on Hal Ashby. Hurrah! Somebody finally wrote the biography that needed to be written, and you did it! About 10 years ago I wrote a woefully superficial article on Ashby for "Images" web film journal. It wasn't much but, at that time, it was about all that was written about Ashby, aside from Peter Biskind's book. As a longtime fan, I'm glad that I at least took a stab at it. Now you have set the record straight and written the definitive work. I'm glad somebody has finally done a great director justice. Well done and my congratulations. Jim Davidson

Nick, I have some questions about Tim Burton's movie "9". Do you know if this movie is opening in Wide release, or is it just staying in Exclusive Engagements? Focus actually announced that it will only be limited but does that only apply to the Wednesday opening? Please let me know if you have any info.

Hi! I just noticed (on Amazon) that finally, something is being written on the genius that is Hal Ashby. When is the book due exactly? I'm really looking forward to reading it. He really is an underappreciated genius, you see his influence in so many places today. Incidentally I just wrote a short piece on him for a journalism project at University, about how there's a danger he'll be forgotten, when I argued that he was just as vital a player in 70s Hollywood as were Scorsese and Coppola. Anyway, I can't convey enough how much I love his films (his 70-79 output anyway) and I try to push them on as many people as I can! One Ashby related regret though is that I've never seen The Landlord, and don't know where to find it. It's long overdue a DVD release. Any knowledge on when it'll appear? I hope to hear from you, Dave Forman (dave_effers@hotmail.co.uk).
